⇔Itinerary of 4 days trip from Fes to Marrakech via Sahara desert:
⇔Day 1: Fes >> Ifrane >> Midlet >> Erfoud>> Merzouga:
⇔ After breakfast, we depart from Fes at 7:30 sharp, passing through Imouzzer Kandar, a town in Sefrou Province, Fes-Meknes. In Ifrane, known for its houses with slanting rooftops designed to manage heavy snowfall, we continue towards Azrou, 1,250 meters above sea level. The name Azrou translates to “stone” or “rock” in Berber, where oak and cedar forests of the Middle Atlas are home to Barbary monkeys.
⇔ Driving south along the N13 over the Middle Atlas, we pass through Timahdite, a village with a Berber name that suggests femininity due to its unique linguistic ending. Our next stop is Midelt, situated at 1,508 meters and known as “the apple capital” of Morocco. It lies at the foot of Jbel Ayachi, the highest mountain in North Africa at 3,757 meters, anchoring the Eastern High Atlas and providing habitat for the bearded vulture. Midelt is a hub for agriculture, commerce, and mining of minerals such as fluorite, vanadinite, quartz, and pirouette.
⇔ Continuing south through the Tizi-Ntaghamt pass, we descend into the Ziz Valley, renowned for its palm trees and extensive oasis. Along the way, numerous small villages dot the landscape.
⇔ Next, we reach the mining city of Errachidia, known for copper, and then Erfoud, famous for its date festival and fossil excavations. The shops here showcase a multitude of fossils turned into artifacts, offering a fascinating visit without any obligation to purchase.
⇔ From Erfoud, we proceed to Rissani, historically known as Sijilmassa, and venture deeper into the desert sands towards our Luxury Camp nestled amidst the dunes of the Sahara. Enjoy a camel ride over the dunes and witness the sunset while savoring traditional Moroccan mint tea. Later, dine on fine Moroccan cuisine under a starry canopy and unwind to Berber music and friendly conversations around the campfire before retiring to your private tent.
⇔Day 2: Merzouga >> Explore the Berber Villages >> Todra Gorges >> Dades Valley:
⇔ We reluctantly depart from the Sahara desert Merzouga early this morning, concluding our “4-day trip from Fes to Marrakech via the Sahara desert” before heading towards the oasis town of Tinghir, renowned for one of the largest palm groves in the country. A delightful walk through the valley leads us to the Todra Gorge, a 300-meter high wall carved deep into the High Atlas Mountains, creating a narrow canyon beneath towering rock walls that change colors as the light shifts throughout the day.
⇔ We will also traverse the Dades Canyon, where a steep, winding access road with numerous bends offers breathtaking views of the steep cliffs and the river below, which rushes dramatically through the gorge, particularly during the spring thaw.
⇔Day 3: Dades to Skoura & the Valley of the Roses >> Ouarzazate:
⇔ The route through the Dades Valley is also known as the Road of One Thousand Kasbahs. You’ll enjoy a magnificent view of a vast valley dotted with small oases and numerous ancient fortresses. While the sand-colored walls of the kasbahs may appear similar, each holds a unique historical treasure inside and provides countless opportunities for striking photographs. We will visit Berber Nomads in their caves and explore the fertile Rose Valley, possibly stopping briefly at Kalaat M’gouna, known as ‘the rose city’, to purchase rosewater before arriving in Skoura.
⇔ Skoura is a tranquil village surrounded by acres of palm groves (les palmaraie), a haven of palm and olive trees interspersed with kasbahs and small villages. Here, we find Kasbah Amridil, a standout among the kasbahs. Originally built in the 17th century, it is one of Morocco’s most renowned living museums, having endured centuries, offering insights into ancient Kasbah life. If time allows, you can also take a short hike to a viewpoint overlooking the valley and the old salt mines.
⇔ We will explore the Skoura Oasis and stroll through the gardens on the north side of the town, passing almond and olive trees. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at a hotel in Ouarzazate.
⇔Day 4: Ouarzazate >> Explore Ait Benhaddou >> the Atlas Mountains >> Marrakech:
⇔ This morning, we begin with a short drive to Ouarzazate, where for centuries, people from the Atlas and Dades Valleys have come together to work at the sprawling Taourirt Kasbah. This massive fortress sits against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains and boasts nearly 300 rooms within its walls. We navigate the maze of corridors to a prayer room on the top floor, offering stunning views over Lake El Mansour Edhabbi, or explore the village within the kasbah for unique local crafts. We will also visit Taourirt and Tifoultout Kasbahs, known as some of the most beautiful kasbahs in Morocco.
⇔ Following the departure of the French protectorate in the 1950s, Ouarzazate became a hub for the film industry. We will visit the Atlas film studios where many famous movies and TV series, such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Living Daylights, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Man Who Would Be King, The Mummy, Gladiator, Asterix and Obelisk, Kingdom of Heaven, Kundun, Legionnaire, Hanna, and Salmon Fishing in Yemen, as well as scenes from Game of Thrones, have been filmed.
⇔ Next, we explore Ait Benhaddou, a significant ksar (a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls), showcasing traditional Moroccan clay architecture. You can spend hours wandering its maze of narrow streets until reaching a fortified granary at the top that offers stunning views of the valley.
⇔ Finally, we ascend into and across the Atlas Mountains for a spectacular drive to Marrakech, crossing the Tizi N’tichka pass at 2260 meters, the highest pass in North Africa. This concludes our services for the 4-day trip from Fes to Marrakech via the Sahara desert.
